Irish Dexter Cattle
In October of 2006 we took delivery of four Irish Dexter heifers and a young bull calf. Did we ever have much to learn- with these being our first cattle- let alone our first Dexters. Two heifers were chondrodysplasia carriers, the other two were not, and the bull was also a carrier. The seller did not elaborate any genetic information to us, truly a case of “buyer beware.”
Fast forward ten years later, we now feel comfortable as Irish Dexter breeders and cattle managers but by no means are we “experts.” That would take decades! We have bred, raised and sold more than sixty Irish Dexter calves. In May 2016 we will put two bulls to two groups of cows for March 2017 calves. One bull is new blood from a sire born in British Columbia, the other bull is from our own herd breeding. Both have great merits and qualities and their calves should be wonderful.
Our cows range in age from one to fifteen, with eight of breeding age. Seven are considered “Traditionally Horned” Irish Dexters and two are “Modern Horned” as they both, while black coated, carry a red gene from a “Modern Red” bull. Our herd is black with the exception of one dun heifer. A look at the ADCA Pedigree Page will give you a glimpse of our current herd.
We strive to continue the horned aspect of Irish Dexters and avoid the polled genetics. Some breeders are “all red and only polled” but we prefer horns, black coats with the occasional dun.
Irish Dexter cattle are inquisitive, lively and thrifty. We are 100% grassfed certified and our cattle only eat what is grown in the field, with hay offered in the winter. Bulls are tractable, calves are low-birthweight and our dams are excellent milkers without udder issues. We truly believe that there cannot be enough questions from our buyers, and we also try to educate buyers as much as we can prior to the sale.
Our Dexter cattle are all genotyped; calves will be given the G5 status of “both parents qualify” so you know who the dam and sire are, for certain. Heifers, bulls and steers for show will be registered with the ADCA and transfer to you will be paid by us. We do not accept “obligate test results” but instead test every calf for Chondrodysplasia and PHA, as well as coat color profile and A2 milk status. Calves are started on halter with a new halter going with the calf. Our veterinarian will come to the farm for health check/Brucellosis vaccine and write the CVI for intra/interstate transport. All this is included in the price of your SteelMeadow Irish Dexter.
We are personally not interested in showing our cattle- we prefer to keep them at home as this limits vaccinations and exposure to other cattle. Buyers who desire to show our cattle request the needed vaccinations from their vets, or we can begin a protocol if asked.
Our farm is open to visitors and we love talking and showing off our Dexters. Although we will not have any calves for 2016, we will be posting the arrivals of 2017 next March- let’s hope it is a banner year for the Heifer Fairy!
