It is no surprise that Irish Dexters are gaining in popularity as the perfect breed of small-farm cattle, and with it, the growing number of breeders producing calves for an expanding market. With the advent of the internet and farm websites like this one, breeders of cattle are finding it more productive, if not financially lucrative, to sell calves off-the-farm rather than at shows, sales, and other venues.
It is to this end that we have, in consultation with other breeders and buyers, determined that lowering our prices for calves will be in the best interest for our Irish Dexters. We will continue to breed only horned Irish Dexter cattle, mostly blacks with the occasional duns. If a buyer is looking specifically for red, polled, or “A2A2” then they can very easily visit those farms who specialize in that subgroup of Dexters. We will also no longer be testing for beta casein milk proteins.
We believe our competitive prices will better promote “old style Dexters” in a market where modern breeding lines and fashion demand ever-increasing prices. If you are in the market for small, tractable cattle who do exceptional on forage, our Dexters are for you. If you are interested in preserving the heritage Irish Dexter breed of small, horned cattle- our Dexters are for you. If you want a Dexter who can not only raise a calf handily, but also provide you with delicious milk- again, our Dexters are for you.
